Finland’s Minister of Defence, Antti Häkkänen, has officially authorised the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command to procure GBU-53 Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II) glide bombs from the United States. This strategic acquisition is designed to equip the Finnish Air Force’s incoming fleet of Lockheed Martin F-35A multirole fighters, marking a significant upgrade to the Nordic nation’s air-to-ground strike capabilites.
The decision supplements Finland’s historic $9.4 billion acquisition programme for 64 F-35 jets, adding a highly advanced, precision-guided weapon system to its arsenal. The purchase underscores Finland’s ongoing commitment to modernising its military infrastructure following its accession to NATO.
The GBU-53 SDB II, manufactured by the US defence contractor Raytheon (RTX), introduces a new tier of tactical flexibility for the Finnish Air Force.
Key operational advantages of the newly acquired glide bombs include:
- Precision Targeting: The munition is capable of tracking and striking moving targets at medium ranges, a vital asset for dynamic battlefield environments.
- All-Weather Operation: Equipped with a sophisticated tri-mode seeker, the SDB II can effectively engage targets despite challenging weather conditions or low visibility.
- Compact Design: The bomb’s relatively small size allows a single F-35A to carry multiple munitions simultaneously, maximising the payload and strike efficiency of every sortie.
Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen highlighted the strategic importance of the acquisition, noting that the technologically advanced glide bombs will strengthen Finland’s defence capabilities “even in demanding conditions.”
Colonel (ret.) Henrik Elo, Director of the F-35 Programme, stated that the weapons provide a capability the Finnish Air Force did not previously possess, allowing the F-35 fleet to contribute effectively to Multi-Domain Operations across all defence branches.
Authorised by the United States Congress as part of the broader HX Fighter Programme, the current acquisition supplements a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) procurement contract initially signed in 2023.
To ensure seamless integration and operational readiness, the procurement package extends beyond the munitions themselves to include:
- Spare parts and essential accessories
- Manuals and technical documentation
- Transportation logistics
- Manufacturer training, repair, and ongoing support services
